Simple idea that too many webmasters never use.

Forums are great for getting backlinks and traffic.

Not the usual, but work on this part:
Open up threads in every part of every forum (review my site, free traffic, etc).
Heck, I open up threads in places like links for sale, even if no one buys.

And of course, other threads people opened up, great opportunity in a lot of them to drop your anchor text and urls.

Just get creative!

Sounds like a pretty good strategy to follow. I will have to start testing out a couple of sites by doing this and see what type of results I end up with. Thanks Iowadawg!

I have always found that forum posting has proved to be a very effective method of getting traffic and some back links. Now most will tell you that the back links are of no value if they are not "do-follow" but I have seen many a page get ranked of my own, even though all the links I have created are no-follow, so I am not so sure about the way search engines "really" deal with this tag.

Either way, I have found forum posting to be more effective than blog commenting in most cases. It seems that you are much more likely to get some direct traffic and click throughs from forum posting especially if you are bringing value to your comments and posts. I don't think people really read through blog comments like they used to, but then again there is so much spam and worthless comments I don't blame em.

Despite people telling everyone to go to blogs with high pr and comment, I have found that it takes more time and effort to comment on blogs.
And true, most people do not even read the comments as they are there to leave their own comments.

Forums are immediate!
People read them (most forums, you can look at how many people have gone to your thread) and people will click if interesting.

One way to get a lot of visitors?
Offer a freebie.

Offering a freebie is an excellent way to get traffic. One way that is effective to get people to your site and get them to keep coming back to your site is to write an ebook and put your site address in the footer. If you offer valuable information they will be sure to come back to your site to see what other information they can get from you.

I have two blogs where I offer free ebooks, scripts and software.
Plus wordpress themes when I find new ones.
And it works for lots of traffic.
Plus I am getting more people linking back to my freebies and my blogs.
Today, put up a good ebook on one blog about CPA (click per action) as a free download.
Now that will be on forums shortly.

What gets me is the number of people selling lists of blogs that are do follow.
Hahahhahaha...and people buy those lists.
Like I said, pain in the butt to be commenting on a lot of blogs.
I tell people, get blogs to write about your site.
Reviews work better than commenting.

You are right, the review of a site carries a lot more link juice and also a lot more weight with the reader. You will see much more direct traffic from click throughs this way. If you have a great site most people will be glad to write a review for you and in many times you can make new relationships with webmasters this way. Getting to know others who are in the same niche as you is always a win win situation :-)

What nixwebo said is right. Forum posting is a powerful tool to get some traffic to your site or blog. People click and read. Conversion may not be that high as you have in PPC method.
