External Linking

Recommended Posts

Since the dreadful introduction of Penguin, I have made it my policy not to have any external links that are not "rel="nofollow".

I have even made some whole pages of useful links to external websites "noindex" and "no follow"

I am wondering if I have, in the process now gone too far?

Do external links to relevant websites "add value" from an SEO point of view, to your own website whether they link back or not?

Yes I think so.  I have gotten some really good incoming links by doing that.

You never know, you might catch the attention of some one important who links back to you

a ) recommending your article as a good read

b ) takes issue with your article and creates link bait for you over the controversy. :)

Sometimes you have to think beyond the initial SEO benefit of doing things.  Becoming a great resource because you are not afraid to link out can turn into you being the "go to guy" via word of mouth elsewhere like social media.

Using the nofollow attribute is important, but not for everything. Google has gotten good at detecting link schemes. If you are writing good content and linking to a resourceful site, there's no reason why use should be using the nofollow attribute

But can it actually do "Harm"  if you use 'no follow' in these instances?

This page is noindex  http://www.brand-newhomes.co.uk/new-home-news-information.htm   as it is just a page links to news items on my other pages.

This page is all "nofollow"  because it contains just links to other websites.

and this is my "useful links page"  http://www.brand-newhomes.co.uk/buying_a_brand_new_home_useful_links.htm which is all all "nofollow"

Or are you just talking about external links within the text content, to kind "articles" have.

For your internal links there's no need to use no follow http://www.brand-newhomes.co.uk/new-home-news-information.htm

The external ones, yes a good idea to use the no follow since the pages are simply links to other sites.

Yes, I was talking about links within text content.
