How do you do 301 re directs?

Recommended Posts

I have several old established web pages that I want to re name, but I didnt want to lose the ranking or have to change loads of internal links to them either.

How do you do a 301 re direct?

The software I use leaves the old page and displays it before it re directs to the new page.

I dont want tow pages the same, just one with a new name.

Any help is appreciated.

I have a windows server!

How to do a 301 redirect using a Windows server

Okay, this is a bit trickier. First, navigate your way to the Internet Services Manager (Programs — Administrative Tools — Internet Services Manager). Once you’re there, select the site you’re redirecting from, and right click to open up the properties menu. This will open up the Context menu. (Sadly, there is no ‘viola’ once this happens.)

How to Properly Implement a 301 Redirect (scroll down to the title How to do a 301 redirect using a Windows server)

If you get your hosting company to help your with this, double check their work by using this: http://www.webconfs.com/http-header-check.php If it doesn't say 301 permanent redirect then they have not done it properly. They won't get it, but it has to say 301 permanent redirect for the search engines.

Above link not working!

I am thinking of migrating to Linex so I have more control and can use .htaccess.

Will this make it easier for 301 redirects?

I have no experience with Windows servers. Since 2003 I have only used Linux based servers and cPanel OS.

301 redirects are fairly easy via .htaccess and very easy via cPanel. There is a place within cPanel that allows you to add the old URL and then place the new redirected URL. You can see the video here on how it's done http://www.cpanel.net/media/tutorials/redirects.htm

If you are considering moving, I offer hosting to select people. Mainly people that I know. Massive Links is hosted on a dedicated server. If you're interested in more details, private message me.

I never even considered losing PR.

At some point we need to stop worrying about Google and just do what we need to do with our websites.

At least 301 re directs are not an issue anyway.
